Drugs are a horror in disguise as a gift from nature.

Lets not forget that we are nature and all that we create in our labs, be that professional or garage amateur, are created by creatures of nature, us. Those very ingredients we strive to consume, are from nature, albeit rearranged and exploited, but nature nonetheless.

The following case study will focus on a female patient aged 36.

Admitted to hospital via the crises team suffering from depression. The patients mental state had been deteriorating several weeks prior to admittance. Suicidal thoughts had increased in frequency. The patient was having trouble sleeping and states that she was hearing voices, one male and one female, constantly fighting with each other. This coincided with a change in her medication and inceased domestic stresses, including a substantial amount of debt and a significant family crises.

Symptoms exhibited by the patient are persistent low mood, auditory hallucinations, persistent depressive thoughts and a preoccupation with comitting suicide. Extreme difficulties in motivation, making it difficult to carry out simple activities of daily living.

The patients medication is currently:

Diazepam 5mg 3 x daily

Diazepam 10mg 2 x daily

Trazadone 400mg 1 x daily

Trazadone 100mg 1 x daily

Prior to admission the patient had discontinued Trazodone after being on this for 4 years and commenced on Diazepam.

However, due to deterioration in mental state Trazodone was recommenced and Diazepam discontinued.

The patient is diagnosed with having a depressive episode. The patient has a history of depressive illness which began, (according to the patient) when she was fourteen years old. She reports that at this age there was an incident of a sexual nature, involving the father of one of her friends.

This was not reported at the time as this man convinced her nobody would listen to her.

She was admitted to hospital four years ago following a serious suicide attempt involving a medication overdose. The patient has a history of Drug Use, using cannabis when she was in her late teens/early twenties. The patient disliked school and was frequently absent.
